About Panem

Panem is a sovereign nuclear state that was established sometime after a series of ecological disasters and a global conflict brought about the collapse of modern civilization. It is situated primarily in North America, consisting of a federal district, the Capitol, and twenty four outlying districts.

For presumably the majority of its existence, Panem's government operated as an authoritarian-totalitarian dictatorship and a police state, with the outlying Districts subservient to the Capitol, expected to provide economic and material services in exchange for protection provided by the Capitol's armies of Peacekeepers. Years of brutal oppression faced by the districts led to the start of civil war known as the First Rebellion, led by District 13. Its failure brought about the Dark Days, as well as a annual event known as the Hunger Games, established as a continual reminder of the failed past insurrection and to never make an attempt at it again. Public executions and whippings, severe restrictions on civil rights, and mass surveillance become common in Panem, if not more so, in the years that followed.

While the Second Rebellion was rooted in resentment of the brutally repressive Snow regime. When it was found out that District 13 still existed and was subtly supporting a conspiracy to other throw the Snow regime. The Capitol had a secret weapon up their sleeve. Peeta Mellark joined the Capitol’s side. Peeta called for a general cessation of hostilities and return to normalcy. The citizens of Panem listened to Peeta and returned to normal. Anyone caught rebelling was killed onsite, this included Katniss Everdeen, who ended up falling victim to Peeta.
Many years have gone by since the rebellions. President Snow had decided to create 24 Districts. This change has split all the Districts in half, making it harder to start a rebellion. President Snow has finally decided to step down for the 100th Hunger Games. The new president is thrilled to finally be overseeing The Hunger Games and not having to participate in them. President Mellark has an amazing quarter quell planned.

The name Panem derives from the Latin phrase Panem et circenses, which literally translates into 'bread and circuses'. The phrase itself is used to describe entertainment used to distract public attention from more important matters. Furthermore, by the government providing ample food and entertainment, the citizens would give up their political rights.

According to the Capitol, Panem has a population of 4,556,778 people. However, adding up the known populations of the Capitol and 12 districts gives it a total of only 1,905,286 people.

Panem's official currency is the Panemian Dollar.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the ruthless Capitol randomly selects two children, each between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twenty four districts, pitting them against each other in a game of survival where they are forced to fight one another to the death. The victor then wins a new house for themselves and their families in their district, along with food, fame, and wealth.
